National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

1. Introduction

  • Announced: 29 July 2020

  • Replaces: National Policy on Education 1986

  • Aim: Transform India’s education system to make it holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, and skill-based.

2. Key Features of NEP 2020

1. New Structure: 5+3+3+4

Replaces the 10+2 system

  • Foundational Stage: 5 years (Anganwadi + Class 1–2)

  • Preparatory Stage: 3 years (Class 3–5)

  • Middle Stage: 3 years (Class 6–8)

  • Secondary Stage: 4 years (Class 9–12)

2. Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)

  • Universal ECCE for 3–6 years

  • New framework called NCF-ECCE

  • Anganwadi + Pre-schools integrated with schools

3. Universal Access & Infrastructure

  • Target: 100% GER (Gross Enrollment Ratio) in school education by 2030

  • Special focus on drop-out reduction

4. Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN)

  • Mission: NIPUN Bharat

  • Goal: Every child attains FLN by Grade 3

5. Mother Tongue as Medium of Instruction

  • Till Class 5, preferably till Class 8

  • 3-language formula continues (no language imposed)

6. Assessment Reforms

  • Shift from rote learning → competency-based assessment

  • Board exams to test core concepts, not memorization

  • Exams can be conducted twice a year

7. Vocational Education

  • Introduced from Class 6

  • Includes coding, internships, crafts, farming etc.
