 Articles are of two types:

1️⃣ Indefinite Articlesa, an
2️⃣ Definite Articlethe
1️⃣ INDEFINITE ARTICLES — a / an
Used for non-specific, general things.
Rule 1: Use “a” before consonant sounds
Examples:
a boy
a car
a house
a university (u = “yu” → consonant sound)
Rule 2: Use “an” before vowel sounds
a, e, i, o, u (when sounding like vowels)
Examples:
an apple
an elephant
an hour (h is silent → vowel sound)
an honest man
an MBA student (M = “em” → vowel sound)
Rule 3: Use “a / an” with singular countable nouns
a book
an umbrella
❌ NOT used with plural or uncountable nouns.
Rule 4: Use “a / an” to show profession, religion, caste, political ideology
He is a doctor.
She is an engineer.
He is a Christian.
She is a socialist.
2️⃣ DEFINITE ARTICLE — THE
“The” is used before specific, known, or unique things.
Rule 1: Use “the” for unique things
the sun
the moon
the Earth
Rule 2: Use “the” for superlatives
the best
the tallest
the most beautiful
Rule 3: Use “the” before famous buildings, rivers, oceans, mountains
the Ganga
the Pacific Ocean
the Taj Mahal
the Himalayas
Rule 4: Use “the” when a noun is repeated
I saw a dog. The dog was barking.
Rule 5: Use “the” before musical instruments
He plays the guitar.
She plays the piano.
Rule 6: Use “the” before names of newspapers
The Hindu
The Times of India
Rule 7: Use “the” for directions (when specific)
The north of India is colder.
Rule 8: Use “the” before inventions
He invented the telephone.
Rule 9: No article before general ideas
Honesty is the best policy.
Life is beautiful.
Rule 10: No article before names of languages & subjects
I study English.
She teaches Mathematics.
3️⃣ ZERO ARTICLE (No Article)
We do NOT use articles before:
Names of people → Rohan, Sita
Countries (except groups: the USA, the Netherlands)
Sports → cricket, football
Meals → breakfast, lunch, dinner
Abstract nouns → love, honesty
General plural nouns → Cars are expensive.
